Spectrocertified® Grinding and Briquetting Additives
Most powdered sample substances are considered multi-phased or compositionally complex. They are comprised of individual particles or crystal phases frequently dissimilar in composition, density, hardness, configuration, size and distribution. Each particle tends to behave as a separate entity from its surrounding constituents. Grinding and briquetting additives are intended to impart the right combination of characteristics to aid the comminution process and provide the necessary ingredient to samples deficient in briquette formation constituents. Additive processed samples are generally more homogeneous with more uniform particle sizes and distribution. Powdered samples are transformed into self-supported pellets with smooth, highly "plasticized" surfaces that resist inadvertent chipping or flaking apart during handling, analysis or storage for future referral.

- And many other types of sample substances exhibiting difficulty in particle size reduction and distribution for XRF analysis.
Additive Chemical Profiles
| ADDITIVE | PROMINENT CHARACTERISTICS |
|---|---|
| X-Ray Mix® [48.7% C, 42.6% O, 8.1% H, 0.6% B] |
Use for general purpose grinding and briquetting. Specially formulated with selective constituents to impart abrasiveness and lubricity to aid in grinding dissimilar particles of moderate hardness for relatively short times. Resultant briquettes are highly "plasticized" with unblemished surfaces and firmly bonded together. Available in powder, 1/4 and 1/2 gm pre-weighed tablets for convenience. |
| SpectroBlend® [77.1% C, 5.4% O, 12.8% H, 4.7% N] |
Available in powder, 1/4 and 1/2 gm pre-weighed tablets. The 44ยต powder is used for blending with pre-processed samples deficient in briquette forming properties and suitable as a diluent for high concentrations. Briquetted samples are firmly bonded together with "plasticized" sample surfaces. Excellent thermal and irradiation exposure resistant properties for grinding difficult-to-process samples requiring long grinding cycles in heat generating metallic vials or vessels. Well balanced with abrasive and lubricious components for grinding and briquetting most samples. Resists re-welding tendencies. |
| SpectroMix® [55.1% C, 28.4% O, 8.0% H, 8.5% Na] |
A cross combination of properties between X-Ray Mix and SpectroBlend. Moderately "plasticized" sample surfaces. Resists "caking" formation by long grinding cycles. Easy clean up with a dry paper towel. |
| Boric Acid [77.6% O, 4.9% H, 17.5% B] |
Highly abrasive for processing samples with strong re-welding tendencies. Sample pellets are fair to moderately bonded together. Frequently used in conjunction with other additives to impart increased abrasiveness to the grinding process. |
